Aivvy
The world's first IOT music player
Role: UX Intern
Aivvy makes smart headphones which learn your music tastes and stream personalized music for you. Without connecting to your phone, Aivvy's headphones can analyze your listening preferences and automatically update your favorite music through Wi-Fi. Aivvy not only serves the functionality of personalized radio like Pandora but also provides a vertical solution of music listening experience!
Role
During my internship period, I helped with redesigning the app experience including navigation, headphone setup workflow, and wireless configuration experience. I also led an external user research project to understand the usability of setting up the headphone, touchpad control, and basic app navigation.
Utilizing tools including sketching, prototyping, and UI design, I have learned the on-board experience working with the dev team, firmware team and product managers. The experience of working in startup environment also helped me to build up the practical knowledge and understanding of working in an agile environment.
Case Study - Usability Testing
The team at Aivvy was curious about the open box experience as well as the basic app navigation. We recruited people externally through various channels (Craiglist, Facebook, Kickstarter...etc ), then selected our target customers and had them interact with the actual headphone and the app prototype on site.
The goal of the usability testing project is to understand:
1. The open-box experience
2. The clarity of LED status and sound cue on the headphone
3. The usability of setting up the headphone through our app

The result is pretty outstanding, we discovered that there's no standardized pattern for LED status. Users were only able to tell whether it's on or off. The Bluetooth connecting state and "music downloading" state were not clarified clearly only through LED status. The team then added voice prompt and updated UI to make sure that users are able to tell the current state of the headphone through various means clearly. Participants also had no issues navigating through the app and understand that the product serves as a "physical Pandora" rather than a fully controllable music service.
Aivvy was successfully funded on Kickstarter and proudly awarded by Red Dot Design Award and CES Innovation Awards.
